Mrs. Bender's participation in "Michigan's Legacy as the Arsenal of Democracy"
Mrs. Bender was a grant winner to go to Lansing in May, 2012 and learn about Michigan's history with design for industry. Towards the end of the 1800's Michigan had a strong commitment to education that lead to the first publicly funded High School (Kalamazoo Central) as well as a strong college investment. This emphasis on education is partly the reason several major businesses were created and thrived in Michigan. A few of the creative businessmen are: W.K. Kellogg in Battle Creek (founder of the Kellogg Co.) , D.W. Upjohn in Kalamazoo (Founder of Upjohn Pharmaceuticals) , Ransom Oldsmobile (founder of Oldsmobile Motors), Henry Ford (founder of Ford Motor Co., and William Durant (Founder of GM)
